Unity govt pact similar to PH-Ismail MoU, says Fahmi

 

Fahmi Fadzil says the pact has no hidden agenda and will help focus efforts on national development as well as solving the people’s problems.

KUALA LUMPUR: The pact among the coalitions under the unity government was signed in an open and sincere manner without any hidden agenda, says communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He viewed the agreement as a continuation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on political transformation and stability that was signed between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and the previous government led by Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Fahmi reiterated that this pact would enable the government to focus efforts on national development and solving the people’s problems.

“This was mooted by lessons learned from the instability of the previous government, which was due to conflict among the parties that formed the government.

“It was made without any hidden agenda or secret agreement,” he told Bernama.

Therefore, he said there was no issue of the MoU being autocratic or violating the constitution, as claimed by some parties, he said.

“In terms of format, this agreement is the same as the previous MoU which also had a clause in which PH promised to support and not reject the 2022 budget or any bill or motion that could have an impact on the government,” he said.

Training his guns on Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, who were reported to have criticised the agreement, Fahmi said they should not criticise the agreement simply because they are not with the unity government now.

“To me, Mas Ermieyati and Muhyiddin are hypocrites. How come they did not say the agreement between PH and the previous government was autocratic when it is almost similar to the current MoU?”

Apart from that, Fahmi said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had never closed the door to cooperation with any party for the sake of the country.

“Until now, he (Anwar) has not closed the door, only that there are parties that do not want to accept (the offer).”

The five main political coalitions — PH, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Warisan — that form the unity government, signed the MoU on Friday.

Among other things, the agreement states that the failure of any MP in the unity government to vote for or support the prime minister, in motions relating to confidence votes, supply bills or procedural motions that affect the federal government’s stability, would result in them being deemed to have resigned. - FMT
