Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh was among the recipients of the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka, awarded in conjunction with Malacca Governor Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam’s 75th birthday.
The honour grants him the title of Datuk.
Expressing his gratitude on Facebook, the Merlimau assemblyperson thanked Ali and the Malacca government for the honour.
“I don’t deserve the award because of my many weaknesses and lack of contribution to the Malacca state compared to others.
“I consider this award to be for the people of Merlimau and the Umno Youth movement.”
Akmal concluded his post with the phrase, “Forever the village doctor,” wishing Ali a happy birthday and praying for his good health and success in all endeavours.
Alongside Akmal, ambassador to Italy Zahid Rastam and Home Ministry deputy secretary-general (management) Abdul Gapar Abu Bakar also received the same title.
Bernama reported that 299 recipients received state honours and awards in conjunction with Ali’s birthday.
As Umno Youth chief, Akmal is known for his outspoken views on contentious issues, especially those related to Malay and Islamic matters.
In March, he called for a boycott of the convenience store chain KK Mart after a photo of socks bearing the word “Allah” surfaced at one of its outlets in Sunway City.
In a separate issue, Akmal urged Umno Youth members nationwide to file police reports against Malaysiakini and its columnist Andrew Sia, following Sia’s description of UiTM as an “apartheid academy” in May. - Mkini
