Dr RA Lingeshwaran said the creation of the new positions, with an annual financial cost of RM1.25 billion, marks a highly significant step in strengthening the public healthcare system.
“As a doctor and a member of the Dewan Negara, I understand firsthand the challenges faced by healthcare workers because of longstanding manpower shortages.
“These new positions will not only ease their workload but also help expedite the delivery of healthcare services to the public,” he said in a statement.
Lingeshwaran said the JPA approval will support the operations of 256 new and upgraded healthcare facilities, while improving public access to more efficient, high-quality and comprehensive healthcare services.
“Even more encouraging is that 7,218 of these positions are across five key service schemes, comprising 1,197 posts for medical officers, 239 for dental officers, 339 for pharmacists, 3,471 for nurses, and 1,972 for assistant medical officers.
“This demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s entire healthcare ecosystem,” he said.
According to JPA, the remaining 6,125 positions cover various other service schemes that support the delivery of higher-quality healthcare services to the public.
Lingeshwaran said although much remains to be done, “at least today we can see light at the end of the tunnel”.
“With clear planning and sustained commitment, I am confident the country’s healthcare system will continue to be strengthened for the well-being of all Malaysians,” he said. - FMT
