Cops probe attacks on 2 Kuching convenience stores

Police are investigating two separate attacks on 24-hour convenience stores here on Sunday night, including one in which an object thrown into the premises triggered two explosions and a fire.

Kuching police chief Alexson Naga Chabu said the first incident occurred at King Centre at about 7.05pm, where firecrackers were thrown at a convenience store.

No losses were reported.

The second attack took place along Jalan Green later that night.

“Two men came to the premises and threw an object inside, causing two explosions and a fire,” Borneo Post quoted him as saying.

The blaze was put out by firefighters.

Alexson said preliminary investigations showed a similar method in how both attacks were carried out.

He said the perpetrators were masked and wore dark clothes, and were believed to have thrown objects containing explosive or flammable materials into the stores.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage, analysing materials recovered from the scenes, and investigating whether the two incidents are connected, he said.

“The motive is still under investigation,” he said.

The cases are being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy a building.

Police are also looking into claims that the convenience stores were selling online gambling “top-ups”.

Alexson said appropriate action will be taken, including applying to the local authorities to revoke their business licences if the claims are proven to be true. - FMT
