Inspection of Semporna resort after intruder molests tourist

Sabah tourism minister Jafry Ariffin welcomed swift police action after a Chinese tourist reported an intruder had molested her at a Semporna resort.

Sabah tourism authorities have been directed to inspect the licensing and security measures of a resort in Semporna after a Chinese tourist was reportedly molested.

State tourism, culture and environment minister Jafry Ariffin said tourism authorities must also coordinate with enforcement agencies where necessary to address any security gaps.

He said all weaknesses must be addressed without delay as tourism operators are responsible for keeping their premises safe and secure for guests.

“I view the reported incident involving a Chinese tourist at a resort in Semporna with utmost seriousness. The safety and security of every visitor to Sabah must remain our highest priority,” he was quoted by Bernama as saying today.

Police arrested a man yesterday after a 25-year-old tourist alleged that he had entered her room and molested her at a resort on Jalan Kamiri, Semporna.

Jafry welcomed the swift police action and urged all parties to refrain from speculation while authorities conduct a thorough investigation. - FMT
