Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the release of the report was part of the government's campaign against corruption, similar to the release of a royal commission report into Tabung Haji.
He said no person involved in misconduct in the land development agency should be let off the hook. “I will not dictate who is to be investigated, charged, or punished. That is the principle we must uphold,” he said at a reunion gathering of the Reformist secretariat, Utusan Malaysia reported.
He denied that the release of the report amounted to an act of retribution. “People might call it an act of vendetta – but what vendetta? What abuse of power?” he was quoted as saying.
Anwar’s remarks come a day after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said it would seek to press charges against two former Felda officials who were arrested last Sunday over alleged irregularities in Felda’s Kuala Lumpur Vertical City development project.
MACC chief Abd Halim Aman said the investigation papers were complete, and recommendations for charges would be submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers next week to seek authorisation to prosecute.
Anwar said the investigation began after the government had to cover Felda’s losses. “I bear responsibility for Felda; every year, we (the government) pay RM980 million to cover losses,” he said at the reunion. “Recently, I saw houses in terrible condition having been neglected and unmanaged for decades. I had to approve RM450 million to repair houses nationwide,” he said.
Anwar said the government decided to investigate Felda to underscore its commitment to preventing corruption and abuse of power, similar to the investigations conducted regarding Tabung Haji. “We reopened the Tabung Haji case, which had been slated to be buried, and called for enforcement action (against) robbery, outright plunder,” he was quoted as saying. - FMT
