Rauf’s announcement puts an end to weeks of speculation on the next state polls.
He also said the caretaker government would continue providing public services to Melaka residents until a new state government was formed.
“Throughout this (caretaker) period, our priority will be to ensure that the state administration remains organised, public services remain uninterrupted and the public’s wellbeing is taken care of.
“All state departments, agencies and local authorities will continue carrying out their respective duties professionally and lawfully,” he said at a press conference.
The Melaka state assembly’s current term ends in December.
Rauf said the decision to dissolve the state assembly early was made after taking into account several factors, including the possibility of natural disasters such as floods expected at the end of the year.
‘We have done our best’
At the press conference, Rauf said he had addressed numerous problems faced by Melaka residents during his tenure, with the state government responding through initiatives such as repairing dilapidated homes, providing free homes and offering financial aid to sick residents.
He said the state government had also listened to the concerns of businesspeople and entrepreneurs, based on information provided by state assemblymen, whom he described as the government’s “eyes and ears”.
“I am very satisfied with all elected representatives who have provided their best services to the people based on the concept of ‘Melaka Sayang Rakyat’,” Rauf said.
Barisan Nasional (BN) formed the state government after winning 21 of the 28 seats contested in the November 2021 state election. Pakatan Harapan (PH) won five seats, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) secured two.
BN is being courted by both PH, its federal ally, and PN ahead of the Melaka election. PN and BN formed an electoral pact ahead of last month’s Negeri Sembilan state election.
Rauf, who is also Melaka BN chairman, was reported to have said that the coalition wants to retain all 21 seats it won in 2021, leaving only seven seats open for negotiations with other parties.
Asked whether talks would be held with other coalitions, Rauf said: “We settle the dissolution first, then we will focus on (collaboration with) other parties.” - FMT
