Release Mandiri duo immediately, urge DAP leaders

 They ask police to explain why Amir Hadi and Dobby Chew were arrested when investigations could have proceeded without depriving them of their liberty.

Three DAP leaders have called for the immediate release of Mandiri activists Amir Hadi and Dobby Chew, describing their arrests as heavy-handed.

DAP central executive committee member Dr Kelvin Yii, DAP international affairs secretary Kasthuri Patto and DAP Youth vice-chief Raja Ahmad Iskandar Fareez questioned whether the arrests were necessary.

“The authorities must explain why their arrests were needed when investigations could have proceeded without depriving them of their liberty,” they said in a joint statement.

The DAP trio said police had a duty to investigate suspected offences, but this must be evidence-based, fair and free from intimidation, political prejudice or any presumption of guilt.

They also questioned the freezing of bank accounts, travel restrictions and a raid on Mandiri’s office, saying such measures could disrupt livelihoods, operations and legitimate human rights work.

“Investigations must never become punishment or intimidation before any finding of guilt,” they added.

Earlier, Mandiri said Amir and Chew were arrested under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, or Amla, and would be taken to the Jinjang police lock-up tonight.

The NGO, which questioned if Amir and Chew’s arrests were linked to their efforts to expose corruption, will hold a gathering outside the Jinjang police station at 8pm.

The DAP leaders also called for an urgent review of the account freezes and travel restrictions, saying any unjustified action should be lifted promptly.

They said Amir and Chew must have access to legal counsel, be clearly informed of the grounds for their arrest and receive every legal safeguard.

They also urged home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to explain the enforcement approach taken by the cops.
