NIBONG TEBAL:
A pile of rubbish at the Pulau Burung solid waste landfill site here caught fire last night, although no casualties were reported.

Penang fire and rescue department operations assistant director John Sagun Francis said an emergency call was received at 11.36pm. Fire engines from the Nibong Tebal fire and rescue station were rushed to the scene.

“Firefighting and containment operations were immediately carried out, including the creation of a firebreak to prevent the fire from spreading.

“The fire, which involved an area measuring 120 by 90 feet, or 1,003 sq m, was brought under control at 12.30am. However, as of 7.30am today, overhaul operations were still being carried out to ensure that the fire is completely extinguished,” he said in a statement.

He said the firefighting operation was divided into two sectors: Sector A, handled by the Sungai Bakap station, and Sector B, handled by the Nibong Tebal station. As of this morning, approximately 40% of the fire in Sector A had yet to be extinguished, while 50% remained in Sector B.

Teams from the Bandar Perda station and the Valdor, Permatang Tinggi and Nibong Tebal volunteer fire brigades were also involved. - FMT
