MCA: Hadi's law abolition call threatens constitutional framework; Sentosa rep wants update on Nepal

MCA Information chief Chan Quin Er has criticised PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s call to abolish colonial-era laws, saying the proposal threatens Malaysia’s constitutional framework and rule of law.

In a statement, Chan (above) said replacing common law wholesale would be a materially different and far more fundamental move than incremental syariah reforms.

She also said Malaysia’s Federal Constitution was built to protect the country’s diverse races, religions and cultures, adding that constitutional supremacy and the rule of law must remain non-negotiable.

Chan said Malaysia’s common law system had evolved to suit the country’s plural circumstances and had underpinned judicial independence, procedural fairness, legal protection and stability, which she said were also important for investor confidence and the economy.

Nepal disaster

Sentosa assemblyperson Gunaraaj George has urged Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan to provide an immediate update on 55 Malaysian families whose relatives were affected by the disaster in Nepal.

He said the families deserved clear and regular updates, including how many had been confirmed safe, injured, missing or remained unaccounted for.

In a statement today, Gunaraaj also sought details on the ministry’s operations in Nepal, and asked what welfare, financial and counselling assistance had been provided to the affected families.

MA63

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim wants the government’s efforts to implement the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) to be framed as a national agenda, rather than an issue confined to Sabah and Sarawak.

He said MA63 should be understood as part of the Madani government’s broader policy direction, with its implementation tied to Malaysia’s development, stability and national unity.

“It is very important because otherwise, it becomes a sectoral issue. Every year, we have to hold separate discussions on Sabah and Sarawak. No. This is a national commitment about development, stability, and what we promised when Malaysia was formed.

“This must be firmly established as a national narrative. We need to encourage Malaysians not to speak only about their race, party or group, but to engage in a broader discourse that strengthens the nation,” Bernama reported him as saying after chairing the 2026 Malaysia Agreement 1963 Implementation Action Council (MTPMA63) meeting. - Mkini
