Shafie, who is the chairman of the party's membership bureau, said Johor had the second highest number of members at 428,663 and Selangor was third with 414,142.
"The total number of Umno members after the clean-up process is 3,159,484. We removed the names of almost 300,000 people, among them those who have died and those who cannot be traced," he told reporters after opening the Semporna Umno Division delegates meeting, here.
Shafie, who is Rural and Regional Development Minister, said the party was seeking out the Umno members who could not be traced to re-register them as members.
He said it would be difficult to trace them because they could be on the move serving in the various states but the effort to find them would continue, and appealed to the divisional and branch leadership to help.
Shafie also said that in this month alone, almost 2,000 people had registered as new Umno members, either online or through the branches and divisions, with the highest membership registration recorded by the Umno Youth wing.
"The online registration in June alone recorded about 1,100 new members," he said.
