Jeffrey: Umno members in Sabah mostly illegals

PKR chief for Sabah and Sarawak Jeffrey Kitingan has dismissed the state’s large Umno support base, saying that it “is nothing for the party to be proud about”.

Jeffrey advised Umno not to go about trumpeting its large membership as it is well known that Umno was beefed up by those who had disposed genuine Sabahans of their rights.

He said Sabah Umno Youth leader Azman Ruslan was misguided when he boasted of the numbers while ignoring the fact that the state is now the second poorest in the country.

"What is so great about having hundreds of thousands of Umno members in Sabah when all Umno managed to achieve is make Sabah the second poorest state in the country?" he asked.

Jeffrey was responding to Azman’s statement on Friday criticising him for saying that Sabah BN chairman and chief minister Musa Aman had lost control of his component parties.

He made the comment after a spate of open squabbles among BN party members forced Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to calm fears that the BN spirit was breaking up in the state.

Azman had criticised Jeffrey for interfering in the affairs of other parties. He said Umno was unconcerned over his attacks against Umno and BN leaders.

'Umno shamelessly undemocratic'

But Jeffrey was unrelenting and said Azman should address talks that Sabah Umno is populated by illegal immigrants from Indonesia and southern Philippines who had gained “citizenship” through fraudulent means.

“Furthermore, BN led by Umno became the Sabah state government in 1991 through undemocratic means … toppling a democratically-elected government.

“Umno shamelessly did the same in Perak,” said Jeffrey, who is also chairman for the Common Interest Group Malaysia (CigMa) and Borneo Heritage Foundation (BHF) president.

“What kind of pride is Umno is talking about? Maybe they are not aware of the mess they created the country.“But the people are not blind…Umno is now stirring its own mess in Sabah by making its own BN component parties unhappy.

“It is time the people of Sabah and Sarawak realise that Umno is the problem, just as the majority of people in peninsular have finally realised this now,” added Jeffrey, who is the brother of Sabah deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
