Flu fails to stop Dr M from championing Malay rights

TUN DR MAHATHIR SHOULD JUST ENJOY HIS PENSION AND HIS OLD AGE AND NOT GET INVOLVED IN POLITICS SINCE HE IS THE ONE WHO HAD CORRUPTED THE MALAYSIAN POLITICAL SCENE WITH HIS 'UNWISE' POLICIES AFTER THE TRUST GIVEN TO HIM AND HIS BN COMPONENT WITH A MAJORITY IN PARLIAMENT.

Despite nursing a flu, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamed was in his element in Pasir Mas here yesterday as he dispelled the notion drawn by Pakatan Rakyat that he has become an ultra-Malay and a top racist in Malaysia. Despite the slight irritants of coughing and a cold, Mahathir heated up the environment at the Pasir Mas railway station when he spoke about why it is important to realise about the significance of Malay rights in the country.

His speech sparked cries of “Hidup Melayu” (Long Live the Malays) as the crowd braved the hot afternoon sun to listen attentively to his contention about Malay rights.

Stressing there is nothing racial about speaking of one’s right, Mahathir claimed the Malays are now divided into three factions (Umno, PAS and PKR) and neither one can govern the country effectively as their percentage of political support is just marginal.

“Malays can suffer the fate of their counterparts in Singapore where their political voice is mostly muted,” he said, adding there is a clarion call for Malays to be united.

The long serving ex-premier was in Kelantan to speak at the controversial Malay Rights Group Perkasa’s rally where some 3,000 people attended. Also present was Perkasa boss Ibrahim Ali.

DAP and Umno slammed

Mahathir fielded all questions posed by the media, especially on criticism from DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang that the former has reverted into becoming an ultra-Malay and the number one proponent of racism in Malaysia.

However, the former premier said it was DAP who rejected the power sharing concept between all races, which was drawn up after Independence.

“DAP wants to govern Malaysia by itself. After decades in the wilderness, the party is now willing to compromise by working with its former enemies (PAS),” he added.

Mahathir said there is nothing racial about speaking the truth although it may not be politically correct for some quarters.

“Look at Umno, now some want them to reject Perkasa because the Chinese would be turned-off. But if they reject Perkasa, how can they get Malay votes. In essence, Umno would become a lame duck and lose all votes from either the Malays or Chinese,” he added.

Asked if Perkasa should become a political party, Mahathir said it was an unimportant point. It is who Perkasa supporters vote for which is important, he stressed.

He said he was not demanding the rights of non-Malays but just to uphold the Malay rights.

There is no intrusion on the rights of other communities in Malaysia as they are regarded as fellow citizens and contributors to our nation building, the medical doctor said.

He said the Malays are split because of the selfish aims of a few politicians who want to become prime minister at all costs including by ceding it to demands, which would set the Malays backwards instead of becoming a progressive community.

Mahathir also blamed Umno to a certain degree as the attitude of the grassroots’ leaders who behaved as warlords had disabled talented and highly educated Malays from joining the party to an extent, the professionals went to join PAS instead.
