Rais: More senior Sabah civil service posts for locals

Rais says more Sabahans appointed is in line with the 20-point agreement.
KOTA KINABALU, Sept 15 — A call for qualified Sabahans to be appointed as heads of federal departments in the state will be honoured by the Information Communication and Culture Ministry, said its minister, Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.

He said this was in line with the federal government’s commitment in the 20-Point Agreement which was concluded with Sabah before the formation of Malaysia 47 years ago.

“Most of the contents of the agreement had been translated in the Federal Constitution. We are taking the matters raised seriously.

“I support this call... I want to see this happen in departments under this ministry,” he told reporters at an Aidilfitri open house hosted by the ministry at Sabah RTM here today.

He was commenting on a call from Upko vice-president Senator Datuk Maijol Mahap to the federal government to honour the 20-Point Agreement, including appointing more Sabahans to head federal departments and agencies in the state to avoid “federalism”.

Rais pointed out that several Sabahans were holding senior positions at the RTM headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and he would like to see a mix of officers from all states in departments under the ministry.

“We want to see interaction and cohesion between senior officers from Sabah and Sarawak with officers from the peninsular at the headquarters in Kuala Lumpur,” he added.

In another development, Rais said that the country’s glory and excellence hinged on multi-racialism or diversity of the people and communities.

He said freedom of religion was enshrined in the Federal Constitution and stiff penalties should be imposed on those who misused the Internet and social networks to run down other religions.

“We must curtail extremism and extremists. And those who understand the social contract through existing provisions will not pursue only the interest of their communities,” he added. — Bernama
