Perkasa not keen to join BN for now

Malay rights NGO Perkasa says that it has no plans for now to be either affiliate or associate members of any political party as they wish to “maintain their independence".

"Perkasa will support any party with policies that are good for the people, in line with the constitution," said its secretary-general Syed Hasan Syed Ali.

Syed Hasan told Malaysiakini by SMS today that any decision to apply for associate membership in BN will be left to the NGO's general meeting next March.

The BN supreme council today agreed to amend the coalition's constitution to introduce direct associate and affiliate memberships.

However, any decision by BN to accept new members will need to agreed by all those in its supreme council. It is expected that an application by Perkasa to be vetoed by a number of BN component parties.

Syed Hasan also said that taking up either associate or affiliate membership with BN would not be easy as Perkasa members came from various political backgrounds.

Let's wait and see

He conceded that he himself did not understand what the BN's intentions were in announcing the new types of memberships.

“Let's wait and see what BN's approach is. And when we understand better, we will reconsider.

“It is difficult for us to accept any invitation (to be affiliate members) at the moment as our members come from various backgrounds,” said Syed Hasan.

Meanwhile, Perkasa's youth chief Arman Azha Abu Hanifah said the matter is expected to be discussed during the NGO's supreme council meeting two weeks from now.

The notorious right-wing NGO headed by Pasir Mas independent MP Ibrahim Ali is said to be closely linked with Umno, the backbone of the BN coalition. - Malaysiakini
