Dr Ling pleads not guilty to cheating charge

KUALA LUMPUR: Former transport minister Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik has pleaded not guilty to a cheating charge when his case was mentioned before Judge Justice Ahmadi Asnawi.

Dr Ling also claimed trial to an alternative charge for similar cheating, which carries a lesser penalty, at the Kuala Lumpur technology court on Wednesday.

The trial is set to be from May 3 to May 20.

Some 15 to 16 prosecution witnesses are expected to testify at the trial.

The former minister is alleged to have deceived the Cabinet into giving consent to a land purchase in Pulau Indah for a mega distribution hub project at Port Klang, according to agreed terms between Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd and the Port Klang Authority. (Kuala Dimensi was the turnkey contractor for the PKFZ project.)

He was accused of hiding facts and committing cheating with the knowledge that it could cause wrongful losses to the Government, which he was bound by a legal contract to protect.

The offence was allegedly committed at the Prime Minister’s office here between Sept 25 and Nov 6, 2002.

He also faces an alternative charge of committing similar cheating at the same place and time, which carries a lesser penalty of up to five years jail or fine, or both under Section 417 of the Penal Code.

Dr Ling had, on July 29, claimed trial to the cheating charge and was freed with a personal bond of RM1mil.
