‘Haul up KK road contractors for shoddy job’

Kota Kinabalu mayor Abidin Madingkir may well have to prioritise 'road works' in his new job.

KOTA KINABALU: New Kota Kinabalu mayor Abidin Madingkir seems to have his work cut out for him.

His first task, according to DAP, must be haul up contractors who shortchange ratepayers with shoddy work and poor upkeep of roads in the city.

State vice-chairman Edward Ewol Mujie said Abidin should be firm with these contractors and cancel agrements if they are found to be incapable of discharging their services responsibly.

“DBKK (KK City Hall) road contractors are not doing their work properly. They are not performing their job under the terms and conditions of the contract work.

“This is proven by the appearance of the bad roads in Kota Kinabalu City. Contractors who cannot discharge their contracted responsibility must terminated by DBKL or they must surrender their contract and allow someone more capable to handle the task.

“We cannot pay someone who doesn’t do their work properly,” Mujie said.

Citing Inaman roads as an example, he said business owners there had complained to the party about the poor road conditions in Inanam Baru which was fanous for its motor vehicle spare-parts shops.

“There are more then 70 spare parts shops here and the roads here have big and deep pot holes.

“It’s difficult to drive along this potholed road. For motorcyclist it is dangerous driving especially when it rains and deep potholes are filled with water …,” he said adding that Inanam Baru roads needed immediate repair.

Mujie said it is DBKK’s responsibility to check and ensure the roads and pavement under their care are in tip top condition at all times.

“We are ratepayers DBKK must monitor contarctor’s work. Perhaps the mayor Abidin can introduce a performance index to check on contractors’ performance and efficiency.

“Abidin should review the situation and make an effort to put these setbacks right,” he said. - FMT
