PUTRAJAYA, Feb 10 — Former US diplomat John Malott’s claims against the federal government should be ignored as they were untrue, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

The deputy prime minister appeared to back allegations from Malay rights group Perkasa and accused Malott of “spinning” stories because he was “close” to PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“That’s his personal opinion. Why do you even want to make a big deal out of it? Who is he? He has no status, he is not even president or prime minister.

“Maybe he is a close friend of Anwar, that is [why] he is spinning (stories),” Muhyiddin told reporters today.

In his article published in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, Malott warned Malaysia against delaying reform plans or risk losing the country’s competitiveness.

The former US ambassador to Kuala Lumpur, who served from 1995 to 1998, also accused the Najib administration of failing to improve race relations in order to protect the ruling party’s support base in the Malay community.

Malott had once described Perkasa as a militant group and had previously written articles favouring Anwar who is facing his second sodomy charge in a decade.

Yesterday, Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali called Malott “a sick man” and claimed that he was instigated by a local politician to continue his attacks against the Malaysian government.

“I believe somebody asked him to do it. Perhaps a Malaysian who is about to reach the end of his political career, but I’m not going to mention his name,” said Ibrahim. - Malaysian Insider
