Closing in on Datuk T: People close to Dr M, Rahim Thamby implicated

Closing in on Datuk T: People close to Dr M, Rahim Thamby implicated

The noose is tightening on the so-called Datuk T and his band of equally shadowy accomplices. PKR sources tell Malaysia Chronicle that checks revealed the entire plot was masterminded by the same "old forces" that had gathered to blow former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim off course in 1998.

Now, Anwar is the Opposition Leader and his enemies are worried he will lead the Pakatan Rakyat to victory in the coming elections. They fear being brought to justice, and most of all, of having to account to the people for the corrupt wealth they have taken away from the country over the past decades.

"No doubt about it. We suspect people linked to Dr Mahathir and Rahim Thamby Chik to be behind the Datuk T scam," the high-level source toldMalaysia Chronicle.

At Carcosa

Checks by party investigators showed that one Shuab Lazim had paid for holding the 'press conference' at the Carcosa Negara Hotel.

Shuab is believed to be the father-in-law of a Cabinet minister from East Malaysia.

"This Cabinet minister is a favourite of Prime Minister Najib Razak's," the source said.

He added that the booking at Carcosa was made through one Kamarul Lail from RISDA, whose chairman is former Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik.

A former Umno vice president, Rahim was a staunch supporter of former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad. He fell from grace in 1994 after he was charged for statutory rape of a minor.

The public prosecutor mysteriously withdrew the charges later but when DAP leader Lim Guan Eng protested on behalf of the rape victim, he was arrested and jailed for 18 months for sedition.

Guan Eng did not give up and is now the secretary-general for DAP and also the Penang Chief Minister.

The cousins

On Monday, news of a video tape showing a man who looked like Anwar having sex with a female prostitute took the nation by surprise. The excitement faded somewhat as it became apparent it was another BN "set-up".

Anwar has blamed the Umno elite of once again trying to trip him. His concerns are not without basis.

Both Najib and his cousin, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, had on Monday evening rushed out to encourage Datuk T to lodge a police report against Anwar.

Very tellingly, they omitted the fact that Datuk had broken the law by screening pornographic material in public.

Datuk T was the key man at the Monday 'press conference' in Carcosa. He played 'host' but refused to identify himself and his colleagues.

Security at the press conference was unusually tight and the manner in which reporters were shuffled in for the separate screenings sparked suspicion that the Special Branch was involved.

Since then, some of those who attended have revealed they recognized the face of one of the security personnel as being linked to the Special Branch.

Several reporters have also said they got wind of the screening after a senior reporter from the MCA-owned Star newspaper persistently called and invited them to attend.

Umi

Speculation that the Monday Carcosa Datuk T screening was a "big production" by the Umno elite got a further boost when political 'villianess' Umni Hafilda told the Star there were 18 more such sex tapes!

Umi was involved in the first sodomy trial sprung by Mahathir against Anwar in 1998. Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin and Rahim were also involved in the case that split Umno down the line and laid the ground for the existing divisive polemics overwhelming the Malay community.

The case also gave Malaysia a huge international black mark and the country has never regained the respect it lost from the kangaroo trial that Anwar was subjected to.
