EC expects higher turnout in Kerdau

The EC expects the results of the Kerdau by-election to be in by early tomorrow evening in light of the state constituency's low voter numbers.

TEMERLOH: The Kerdau by-election tomorrow is expected to see a higher turnout than the 2008 general election, Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said today.

He said this was due to the fact that polling for the 16th by-election falls on a Sunday.

“At least 80% (voter turnout),” he told reporters here, adding that he expected those who work outside the constituency to be back for the weekend.

The general election in 2008 saw the voter turnout at 80.3% while the 2004 national polls registered 79.7%, according to the EC.

Wan Ahmad also said results would be announced early tomorrow evening in light of the constituency’s low voter numbers.

Kerdau, which falls under the Kuala Krau parliamentary seat, has 8,999 registered voters.

There are 22 streams – comprising 350 voters on average – in 12 polling districts scattered around the rural constituency.

“If all goes well, all ballot boxes should be back at Dewan Tun Razak (counting centre) before 7pm,” he said.

“If we can air the results on prime time news (8pm), that’ll be even better.”

He also advised all parties involved to respect election laws so that the election process can proceed smoothly.

Voters here will march towards the ballot boxes tomorrow to decide between Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad and underdog Hassanuddin Salim of PAS.

BN won the state seat in the last two general elections, with its majority slashed significantly in 2008.

PAS is looking to reduce BN’s majority even more this time while BN intends to continue its winning streak from Galas, Batu Sapi and Tenang. Polling will take place between 8am and 5pm. - FMT
