Palanivel, Indians need a Felda-type scheme

your say'Maybe it would be good if Palanivel send some of the MIC Datuks and Tan Sris to live and work in the estate for RM700.'

Palanivel tells urban poor to work in estates

Collin Abraham: It is a sad day for me to note that after serious involvement in research, book publications, press media and online posting over a period spanning some 40 years, I should live to hear of G Palanivel's advice to the urban Indian poor to work on estates.

Anonymous_3e06: This was what many of our forefathers did when they came to this land. Today, we are told the Indians were not responsible for the development of this country.

They suffered and they died young, they were exploited both by the managers and the clerks of the estate. Palanivel, you are now asking them to go back to the estates for a mere RM700 a month with the assurance of free housing and transportation?

Indians have to find their own way to survive in the cities. They will suffer in the beginning but not through the MIC way of exploiting the poor and giving them empty promises. Maybe it would be good if you send some of the MIC Datuks and Tan Sris to live and work in the estates for RM700.

Soapbox_40a0: Since Palanivel is so influential with the Sime Darby group, he should convince them to carve out a few thousand acres that they find difficult to manage and create a Felda scheme of these "displaced" Indians. They will happily return to the estates as owners, and employ educated Indians to help them manage their lots.

Palanivel, you are supposed to be leading them to prosperity, not backward to colonial times.

Voice: So at the end of the day, many Indians will only work and live in plantations or some dilapidated areas, whereas immigrants such as Bangladeshis, Burmese, Indonesians and Africans who flood the towns and cities will earn better income, live in better conditions, enjoy the amenities which the rakyat are supposed to enjoy.

This suggestion by the deputy minister will make Indians suffer even more and become more backward, instead of becoming better and more competitive.

Why don't Palanivel ask those immigrants in towns who are poor to work on the plantations? And why don't these immigrants work in the plantation sector? The reason is that even the poor immigrants look down on the low income and poor living condition in plantation areas.

Indian Ji: Palanivel, you already realised that Indians in cities/towns are unable to make a living themselves. I agree with you.

Other communities have funds, Felda, special rights, discounts, unlimited sponsorship, but what do Indians have? What have you done for us? If Indians can't make it in town/city, have you find out the reason behind the failure?

Don't blame citizen, blame yourself if they couldn't grow. By chasing us back to estate, what is the guarantee we can get from MIC/BN that our water/electricity/security/road/house/estate Tamil schools/temple/welfare/wages/medical care will improve?

I advice you go back to your office and think twice what poor Indians will gain after they are back to estate.

P Dev Anand Pillai: No matter how crude S Samy Vellu might have been, he had always wanted the advancement of the Indians in whatever they do.

If they had started as labourers in estates then today they should own the estates But instead we now have a new president who is asking the Indians to go back to the estates so that the Umno government can continue to isolate them.

Come on Mr President, we have to move forward, open up the land holdings to Indians let them own land and you will see what wonders they can do - dairy farming, vegetable plots, and many cottage industries which the Indians have now got to beg the Umno government for licences to make a living and that too is only given when the right amounts are given to the Umno-Malay rent seekers.

Open the scrap business to the Indians and you will see many little Laksmi Mittals in the making. But instead of motivating us like this, you ask us to go back to the estates! You should not be in this post in the first place.

AnakPinang: Wasn't the NEP is to do away with identification of jobs with race? With Felda still keeping the Malays in debt and Palanivel is telling Indians to go back to the estates, it's clear that the NEP has failed everyone.

What's with the single mother remark anyway? It's precisely this mentality that the Indians are not good for anything except tapping rubber and being labourers. If it's single Malay mothers, they get money, re-training, etc, but if it's a single Indian mother, she has to go back to the estates.

Dr Suresh Kumar: Poor Indians in estates were working for a pittance for many years. They put in hard work and long hours enduring disease and insect bites, while Malaysian leaders were making tonnes of money from the sale of rubber. Nobody cared, yet these people never complained, and life went on rather peacefully.

Then came the 'statesman' or rather the bogeyman, who sold the estates to the rich Chinese developers, hence created a new Indian underclass. That wound had hardly dried, yet comes an Indian leader asking them to go into oblivion.

Human Resource Minister Dr S Subramaniam recently advised Indian parents not to dream of educating their children to be doctors, Palanivel tells the Indians to go back to the estates, while HRP/Hindraf fights for minimum wage, more intake into critical courses, decent homes, government jobs, etc.

What a mockery by our so-called Indian leaders. I am totally speechless, Palani.. - Malaysiakini
