Ex-CM: Guan Eng put words in my mouth

Koh Tsu Koon comes up with evidence that he never announced a RM4 billion investment for Penang.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Penang chief minister Koh Tsu Koon attacked his successor Lim Guan Eng for “putting words in his mouth” over a RM4-billion project in Malaysia.

In the latest tit-for-tat between the two Penang leaders, Koh said that he never quoted the exact amount when he made the announcement on the investment on May 16.

“I just indicated that there were things coming. But the exact amount, the things coming and the nature of the initiative should be the responsibility of the company and Mida (Malaysian Industrial Development Authority,” Koh told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

Koh produced a statement which he claimed was verbatim with what he said on May 16. It read: “In New York, he (Prime Minister Najib Razak) will make an announcement with a multinational company that is ready to bring a new initiative.”

In the statement, Koh said that the initiative was the result of Mida and the federal government’s efforts on behalf of Penang.

FMT previously reported that Lim had accused Koh of embarrassing Najib through his hasty May 16 announcement.

On May 19, Najib then announced that Motorola would be investing RM4 billion in setting up a “Global Excellence Centre” in the DAP-controlled state.

Koh also said that Reuters had made a mistake in reporting on the RM4 billion investment.

The former CM showed copies of two Reuters reports.

One reported that the upcoming Motorola investment was “about RM4 billion”. The second one, corrected a little over two hours later, allegedly showed that Motorola did not specify an investment amount, but had already pumped in RM4 billion into Malaysia.

Koh then accused Lim and the DAP of continuing to act like the Opposition, even though they were in control of the state government.

He added that Gerakan and the federal government were still thinking about Penangites.

“Even though I am no longer the CM, some companies still contact me, and we are still in touch. I still help them in a low-profile way,” Koh said.
