Kimma seeks recall of Ambiga’s datukship

The Indian Muslim group’s youth wing sends a memorandum to the Sultan of Perak.

KUALA KANGSAR: The Indian Muslim organisation Kimma has asked the Sultan of Perak to strip Bersih 2.0 chief S Ambiga of her datukship.

The request was made in a memorandum submitted to a palace official by Amir Hamzah Abdul Razak, the youth chief of Kimma (Kongres Indian Muslim Malaysia). He was accompanied by three other members of the youth wing.

The memorandum expressed a fear that the July 9 “Walk for Democracy” planned by Bersih would cause disorder and affect the livelihood of people living in Kuala Lumpur.

It said Ambiga did not deserve her Perak datukship because she was tarnishing Malaysia’s name by claiming that the election process in the country is flawed.

Amir told FMT he also feared that the rally would spark the kind of political turmoil that has happened in Egypt and other countries in the Middle East.

Bersih has given assurances that the rally will be peaceful and would end with the submission to the Yang diPertuan Agong of a memorandum seeking free, fair and clean elections.

Amir said he doubted the organisers’ ability to maintain peace throughout the event.

“How can you expect Ambiga to control about 500,000 people that are expected to turn up on July 9?” he said. “It will result in chaos and public disorder in Kuala Lumpur.”

The far-right Malay group Perkasa and Umno Youth have announced that they will hold counter-rallies on the same day. Like Ambiga, Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin have ignored official warnings that their rallies will be illegal.

Asked why Kimma was not asking for the withdrawal of Ibrahim’s datukship, Amir said: “Ambiga is the root cause of this event. If she stopped the rally, then the other two will also stop theirs.”
