KOTA BARU - Kelantan's PAS-led government is considering giving incentives to those who marry single mothers, provided they inform their first wife about their intentions, the house was told here on Tuesday.
State Women Development and Health committee chairman Wan Ubaidah Omar (PAS-Tanjung Mas) said the move was triggered by a suggestion from the Ahmad Baihai Atiqullah (PAS-Pasir Tumboh) on Monday.
She said the incentive, in cash or kind, was a novel idea and would help single mothers, divorces or widows, to get a husband.
However, the incentive would not be given to those who fail to let the first wife know.
Wan Ubaidah said the government had yet to decide on the quantum and was working out the details.
According to her, there were at least 45,000 single mothers in Kelantan and effort must be made to reduce the figure.
She said that the government was trying to encourage healthy polygamous marriages as it would help solve myriads of social problems plaguing single mothers.
She said most polygamous marriages get into trouble when husbands failed to treat their wives fairly.
