The PAS spiritual advisor attacked Dr Mahathir for saying that DAP’s Karpal Singh had influenced PAS into abandoning its Islamic principles, and claimed he had evidence that the Umno politician had fought against the enactment of hudud laws.
“As far as I can remember, the person who had sent a letter to the Kelantan government in opposition over hudud laws at one point of time was Mahathir Mohamad and not Karpal Singh.
“Perhaps this person named Mahathir has forgotten, for the purpose of refreshing his memory I can show him the letter, it is still in my possession,” the Kelantan mentri besar wrote on his Facebook page today.
Dr Mahathir said yesterday that the Karpal was the actual winner in last weekend’s PAS elections, claiming the results showed the party as having abandoned its Islamic principles.
The Umno veteran added that PAS’s new push for a welfare state was proof that the Islamist party had abandoned its fight for an Islamic state.
The former prime minister accused PAS of forsaking its struggle to implement Islamic and hudud laws just to appease its Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition partner DAP.
KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said today Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was against hudud laws as the former prime minister had previously opposed the Kelantan government’s plans to implement it.
