Police summon six Bersih leaders today

Bersih 2.0 said leaders from six NGOs and political parties which are members of the polls watchdog coalition have been summoned by the police for questioning today.

NONEThe six are Bersih 2.0 chief Ambiga Sreenevasan, steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah, Selangor senior exco secretary Teresa Kok, social activist Hishamuddin Rais, Lawyers for Liberty cordinator Fadiah Nadwa Fikri and Party Socialist Malaysia secretary-general S Arutchelvan.

According to Maria (right), a police officer from Kuala Lumpur's Criminal Investigation Department sent an SMS yesterday asking them to go to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters for their statements to be taken.

Among the six, Maria is to be the first to meet with the police at 2pm today, while Ambiga is to follow suit half an hour later. Meanwhile, Kok and Fadiah are to see the police on Monday.

Want to meet cops together, not separately

Maria said that while Bersih will cooperate with the police investigation, she is against six of its leaders being be picked out and forced to provide their statement one at a time.

"That is not good, not after the way the police had acted yesterday," she explained.

Maria was referring to a Bersih roadshow in Shah Alam last night where three were arrested, as well as the arrest of six PSM activists in Kluang, Johor.

Early this morning, Bersih made the decision to delay its meeting with the police, but they have yet to discuss it with the police.

"There is no need for us to meet the police immediately. We want to go as one group, rather than being singled out," she told Malaysiakini.
"We will make the arrangement with police for all of us to go next Monday instead.”

Despite clampdown, roadshows to go on

Maria said the SMSes they received said that the police probe was in relation to the Bersih 2.0 launch last Sunday.

"All of us are under investigation, but we not sure what offence we had committed," she lamented.

Maria also said that another nine roadshows would be held across the country in the lead-up to the July 9 rally.

"(Despite the clampdown), the roadshows will go on as planned," she vowed. - Malaysiakini
