Wanita PKR reaches out to rural women voters

Wanita PKR will launch its 'Wajah' programme on July 2 to reach out to women voters in rural areas.

In updating them on national issues, the wing hopes to transform their political maturity and change their perception of opposition parties.

NONEWanita PKR head Zuraida Kamaruddin (right) said 'Wajah' is “a strategy, initiative and idea from Selangor Wanita PKR”.

“We will approach women voters in traditional villages, Felda plantations, estates, and Orang Asli villages," she said today.

"We hope to mobilise 100 Wanita PKR members from each division to each approach 20 female voters in their area to highlight PKR's Demi Rakyat and Orange Book (initiatives)."

Zuraidah said she hopes this approach will win hearts in the opposition's battle for votes.

She pointed out that, on a political basis, there is no level playing field as the BN federal government controls the print and electronic media.

"Realising this, Wanita PKR will reach out to women who may be too busy taking care of their (families) and career to be politically informed," said Zuraida, who is also the Ampang MP.

Zuraida said 'Wajah' is an important programme where vital information which is not channelled by the mainstream media could be brought to the voters as these people may not have Internet access and this limits their exposure to the actual happenings in the real world.

She said it is vital that the information is channelled to them without any barriers as there are a lot of false information and news being circulated which had poisoned the perception of the people towards PKR and other Pakatan Rakyat members.

'Malaysian women left behind'

“If possible Wanita PKR would want to replace Wanita Umno which has been a force in the rural areas. I know it would be a long battle as Umno has more than 55 years of history but we will try to counter the thoughts and ideas which are poisoning the minds of the people in the rural areas,” she said.

Zuraida also said that according to the Global Gender Index last year, Malaysian women are ranked 101 in the world, and women here are behind in terms of their counterparts in India, Thailand and Indonesia.

“While Malaysia has progressed, the position of women in the country is less to be desired as they continue to be left behind and the study by the Global Gender Index proves this. For this reason, we want to create this awareness among women in the rural areas about the party's aspirations and with this it would help them know more about the world around them.

“With this, we hope to improve the rankings in the Global Gender Index at the same time,” she said, adding that Pakatan states of Penang and Selangor are going in the right direction by appointing more women to head government departments.

Zuraidah said this showed women are capable of leading.

Srikandi upset over lax attitude of police

In an unrelated development, PKR Srikandi chief Siti Aishah Shaik Ismail is upset over the lacklustre attitude by the police over insinuations made to her after she lodged a report over a posting made by an allegedly BN-friendly Facebook commenter Rango Crew, who made threats on her.

“I have made a police report against this Rango Crew and the police made insinuations against me, asking do I feel threatened or do I like it. What these sexual insinuations are for and whether it is proper.

NONE“This person made a comment on rape and making threats of rape and the police, including the investigating officer, are making a joke of the matter. The comment made by the person just goes to show how the BN leaders are, and my regret is that the police personnel who interviewed me are also turning in such a direction,” she said.

Siti Aishah (seated, in picture) said she managed to trace who Rango Crew was and passed the information to the police, but they declined it, saying they have yet to receive feedback from the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission.

She questioned how this could be as she was willing to provide the information and the police do not want to respond to that.

She hopes the police would properly investigate the case and take action on those who made the posting.
