Zaki Yamani, one of seven PKR Youth members arrested, had tried to hand the memorandum to Najib when the prime minister arrived at KL Sentral from Putrajaya via the Express Rail Link (ERL) with other Cabinet members to launch the Kibar Jalur Gemilang programme.
Police then converged on the group of nearly 30 as they attempted to gatecrash the launch, arresting 10 of the group who were clad in yellow T-shirts supporting the Bersih movement for free and fair elections.
Those arrested include aides to PKR lawmakers Chua Tian Chang and Zuraida Kamaruddin.
The aide of Batu MP Chua, Rozan Mat Azen Mat Rasip, said that police had taken them to the Jalan Travers police station to have their statements recorded.
“We also want to lodge a police report because we were physically assaulted,” the PKR Youth deputy information chief said.
Thirty PSM members, including Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Devaraj Jeyakumar, were arrested on June 25 in the run-up to the July 9 Bersih rally for allegedly attempting to revive communism and “waging war against the Agong.”
Although two dozen others were subsequently released, the six including Dr Jeyakumar were rearrested under the Emergency Ordinance on July 2 and have yet to be released despite sustained protests from opposition leaders and human rights activists.
