Jui Meng: Bersih shows Chinese fear of Umno has "fled"

PKR vice president Chua Jui Meng slammed the BN for trying to tarnish the Bersih 2.0 rally with a racial taint.

In particular, he zoomed in on the MCA for discouraging the Chinese from attending the July 9 march, pointing out that the large number of young Chinese professionals who came was a slap in the face for party president Chua Soi Lek and underscored the irrelevance of the MCA.

"From Masjid Jamek to Menara Maybank, Puduraya, Chinese Maternity Hospital, Jalan Sultan nearest to Merdeka Stadium, Petaling Street, Jalan Masjid and the finale at KLCC, there were tens of thousands of all races," Jui Meng, a former Health minister and ex-MCA vice president, told Malaysia Chronicle.

From a Chinese to Malay rally

Indeed in the runup to the July 9 march, the Bersih 2.0 rally was portrayed as a 'Chinese' rally, referring to the large number of urban dwellers and cyber-citizens who tend to support the Pakatan Rakyat led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

But when that failed to douse the interest of Malays, who were also raring to join the country's largest peaceful assembly in years, Soi Lek came out to warn the Chinese not to take part as it could be dangerous. As a bogeyman, Soi Lek pointed to Perkasa which had threatened the safety of the community if they attended the rally.

Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali had even told the Chinese to "stock up" on food, while UMNO Youth also warned they would stage a counter march to Bersih.

When the scare-mongering did not work and as the July 9 deadline came closer, UMNO senior leader Ali Rustam called for the citizenship of Bersih chairman Ambiga Sreenevasan to be revoked. The rally was banned and Bersih outlawed. But again, it failed to stop supporters from beating a police lockdown on the city.

When the rally was finally held and despite the unprecedented police brutality that left one dead and thousands injured, the UMNO-controlled press begin to insinuate that most of the Bersih supporters were Malays and from arch rival PAS party.

The intention was to drive a wedge amongst the races and it is this divide-and-rule policy that has enabled UMNO to retain power for the past 5 decades.

The bogeyman is finally dead

However, video footage and pictures have emerged by the thousands and made freely available on You Tube. It is clear that the BN had lied. The crowd was multiracial and even Marina Mahathir, the eldest daughter of former premier Mahathir Mohamad, said so.

Like Jui Meng, Marina had donned tracked shoes and walked the streets, braving the tear gas and chemical-laced water fired almost indiscriminately by the police.

Jui Meng condemned the MCA for trying to keep the Chinese in fear of UMNO in the same way that UMNO is always discouraging the Malays from mixing with the other races.

"The Chinese came out in large numbers, the fear of UMNO has fled. It was truly a rally of the people, by the people and for the people. With such undaunting spirit and determination, nothing can stand against the power of the people. We are witnessing the flailing claws of a near-to-death UMNO-BN," said Jui Meng.

Stooge and sycophant

He also hammed MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai, also the Health minister, for trying to cover up for Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein and the police who have been accused of shooting tear gas into the Tung Shin Hospital.

Liow had refused to acknowledge the multiude of photos and video clips showing tear gas canisters exploding within the hospital compound during the rally.

"Liow is a sycophant and a stooge. It is international convention that hospitals and ambulances should not be attacked in times of war or peace. Hence, the police action is unacceptable and against convention," said Jui Meng.

"The Tung Shin staff had already said it happened and it is wrong of the minister and the hospital board to deny without a doing thorough probe. The first priority must always be the patients."
