Nothing will stop Saturday rally, says Bersih

KUALA LUMPUR - Electoral reforms coalition Bersih 2.0 has again warned the government against its crackdown on the movement's rally this Saturday amid speculation that the city centre would be completely shut down.

The coalition also pointed out that it would be futile of the authorities to resort to any shutdown of internet services including social media.

“Bersih 2.0 warns the Federal Government that should access to the mobile phone networks, the internet, mobile 3G services, specific websites or social media be compromised in any way whatsoever, then the authorities will look absolutely no different from the Middle Eastern dictators who have used the same measures with no success whatsoever,” said Bersih steering committee in a statement.

The police have rejected the claim, and said it would take action against those spreading the rumour about an internet shutdown.

'Come in today and tomorrow morning'

Bersih also advised the public to enter the capital today or tomorrow morning, due to road blocks to prevent entry to tens of thousands of people including from outside Kuala Lumpur.

“Observing the shocking fact that bus permits to Kuala Lumpur have already been frozen, plans seem to be well in place to make entering Kuala Lumpur on the 9th of July to as difficult as humanly possible,” it added.

Earlier today, Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Syed Hamid Albar said temporary bus permits for travel across the peninsula to Kuala Lumpur had been frozen effective tomorrow.

Bersih reiterated that no obstacle would weaken its resolve to gather peacefully at Stadium Merdeka.

“Should any of the above repressive measures come into effect, Malaysians and the international community will witness for themselves the desperate and unwarranted extremes to which the government is willing to go to prevent clean and fair elections.

"The government will also be unequivocally and fully responsible for the loss of business, the loss of confidence within the investment community, and the complete loss of goodwill towards Malaysia’s political and commercial standing,” it stressed.
