Increase in car numbers to blame for failed Ops Sikap, says traffic chief

September 15, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — A greater volume of vehicles on the road has been identified as the main reason behind the failure of Ops Sikap 24 to reduce accidents and fatalities during the recent balik kampung period, Bernama Online reported today.

An estimated 20 million vehicles took to roads throughout the country between August 23 and September 6 compared to 18 million in the same festive period last year, Kuala Lumpur Traffic Chief ACP Rusli Mohd Noor was quoted by Bernama as saying today.

During Ops Sikap 24, 19,606 accidents were reported this year compared to 16,817 cases in 2010, or an increase of 16.5 per cent, while the number of fatalities increased to 289 this year from 248 in 2010, he added.

He said the most fatalities involved motorcyclists (178), followed by individuals in cars (67), pedestrians (20) and individuals using other modes of transport such as vans and lorries (24).

Rusli also pointed out that a traffic study conducted by Bukit Aman showed that 85 per cent of accidents had been caused by poor drivers, who lost control while speeding, drove dangerously, practised tailgating and traversed junctions and interchanges without due caution.

He mooted the idea of reviewing or reducing the speed limit on roads, especially for highways and expressways, arguing that despite the enforcement of stricter rules and penalties for road offences, the number of accidents caused by speeding had increased of late.
