KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — Businessman Low Taek Jho, whose close ties with the prime minister’s wife has raised eyebrows, described Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor as his good friend and rubbished suggestions she is his godmother.
“Rosmah (picture) is not my godmother. She is my good friend,” the Penang-born billionaire was reported as saying by news portal Merdeka Review yesterday.
The bilingual news site had plucked the story from Chinese-language daily Kwong Wah Yit Poh who interviewed Low at last Sunday’s cycling event attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak during his weekend trip to Penang.
Better known as Jho Low, the high-flier famous for partying with Hollywood superstars related that he befriended the prime minister’s son while studying in Britain and soon became close to the family.
He also said he had introduced many investors to Malaysia.
At age 20, Low had set up, with schoolmates from the Middle East, an investment fund called The Wynton Group, valued at US$1 billion (RM3.2 billion).
Now 29, Low had been involved in the set up of the Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA) which was eventually “federalised” to become the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a government-linked company that recently won a RM500 million contract to redevelop the old Sungai Besi airport in the capital city.
