KJ: Mat Sabu too scared to debate me

Umno Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin today claimed a moral victory over PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu after the latter snubbed an invite for the duo to debate the Bukit Kepong issue.

NONEIn a series of hard-hitting statements on micro-blogging site Twitter, Khairy (right) said that Mohamad's excuse that he is not a fitting candidate to debate the former smelled of "cowardice".

"So let the record show that I had accepted an invitation by the PAS Kelantan government to go against Mat Sabu (as Mohamad is widely known), but he was scared and ran away. Don't try to spin this bit of history.

"One thing is for sure. I now realise that PAS has elected a cowardly (bacul) deputy president who has no dignity. He is afraid because he is wrong. Defeated before the battle," he spat.

Khairy was responding to Mat Sabu, who told Malaysiakini that while he was not declining the invite, he felt it was unsuitable for him to debate a Youth chief.

In sharp rebuke, Khairy reminded Mat Sabu that PAS vice-president Husam Musa had "humbled himself (mencemar duli)" in 2008 by facing the Khairy, who was then only deputy youth chief.

"(Husam) was the vice-president and senior Kelantan exco member, but he agreed to debate and we did so in front of more than 3,000 people.

"At least Husam was bold enough to push aside hierarchy and party protocol for the sake of openness in politics. He was brave. We met on an intellectual stage," he added.

'He's not even a YB'

Anticipating criticism from Pakatan Rakyat supporters, referred to by the MP as Pakatanis, Khairy took a bolder swipe by saying that Mat Sabu was not even an elected representative.

mat sabu pc with salleh man 190811"The Pakatanis will begin their spin, saying (Khairy) is not a minister so he is unqualified to face Sabu (left). Hey, have you forgotten that Sabu never even won an election? He's not even a YB," he said scathingly.

He added that while he had no qualms debating PAS Youth chief Nasruddin Hasan Tantawi, whom he said is a "nice guy", it would be a case of "been there, done that" as the duo had done so recently.

Besides, he said, it was not him who issued the challenge to debate Mat Sabu.

Rather, it was the Kelantan government, which had invited both of them to debate the issue and that of history of pre-independent Malaya at an event scheduled for the end of the month.

The event is due to take place at Balai Islam in Kota Baru, a venue deemed by Khairy as PAS' "lion's den".

PAS Youth chief Nasruddin has expressed willingness to face Khairy, but stressed that it should not be a 'brawl' but an intellectual debate.

johor pas chief suhaizan kaiatJohor PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat (right) too echoed this, saying that as a Johor native, he was more than willing to take on Khairy in a bid to "uncover historical truth"

As expected by Khairy, Suhaizan labels the former "small fish" (ikan bilis), who is "not at par" with Mat Sabu.

But beyond that, Suhaizan called Khairy's bluff in pointing out that if Umno was indeed brave, it would have taken on Mat Sabu and PAS on issues of electoral fraud and other irregularities.

Mat Sabu is a steering committee member of Bersih 2.0, the coalition for clean and fair elections.

'BN's black magic of distraction'

Besides this, Suhaizan claimed that the whole Bukit Kepong fiasco was "black magic" to distract the rakyat from bigger issues that the BN government could not address, such as the high cost of living.

"The rakyat wants to know if the government is serious in addressing their welfare needs. When the PM and his wife can take a trip to Perth, the rakyat tighten their belts in spite of the Hari Raya and Merdeka celebrations because of BN-Barang Naik (price hikes)," he said.

Yesterday, Khairy said he had accepted the invitation to debate, but reportedly also said that he was only willing to face Mat Sabu on the matter.

Mat Sabu is under fire for allegedly saying in a speech that insurgent Mat Indera, who led the attack on the Bukit Kepong police station in 1950, was the real hero of Bukit Kepong, not the police personnel who were on the British payroll.

The issue was raised by Umno-linked daily Utusan Malaysia, with other BN-linked media following suit in the matter that is said to have raised the ire of many former servicemen.

Capitalising on this, Khairy announced that Umno Youth would hold a nationwide roadshow showcasing ex-servicemen who had fought communist insurgents.
