Musa denies framing Anwar in power abuse trial

Former Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan has denied an allegation by former Kuala Lumpur CID chief Mat Zain Ibrahim that he and Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail concocted evidence to get PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim convicted on his abuse of power charge in 1999.

NONEMalay language daily Berita Harian reported today Musa's rejection of the allegation, and quoted him as saying the claim was part of a conspiracy by Anwar.

Contacted by the Umno-linked newspaper, Musa refused to give further comment on Mat Zain's allegation, describing it as a lie that should not be made into a big issue.

"Read again the journal related to the case from the beginning to the end, on what had happened throughout the trial. Why raise the issue now, since the case happened almost 12 years ago?

"I believe this is all part of a fraudulent conspiracy by Anwar. I never bother about reports published in blogs because all these reports are not true and merely lies," Musa is quoted as saying.

"Let him say what he wants to say, I will not bother and it is not for me to explain about his allegation because it is not true."

This is the first time the former IGP has responded to the allegations that have been levelled against him by the former Kuala Lumpur CID chief.

'Musa, Gani, cheated for their own benefit'

Mat Zain had on Monday accused Musa and attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail of concocting evidence and cheating to secure the conviction of former deputy prime Anwar Ibrahim on the abuse of power charge.

Musa and Gani, he said, had done this for their joint benefit. Both had risen in ranks, with Musa, the investigating officer in Anwar's Sodomy I case, becoming inspector-general of police and Gani, then the head of prosecution, becoming attorney-general. Musa retired recently.

"It is not wrong to say the jail term Anwar faced is an injustice to him as a result of both their (Musa's and Gani's) actions. I am basing this argument on documentary evidence and statements that I have and are within my knowledge," Mat Zain had said in his open letter to the current Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar.

NONE"I am also saying this because there are important statements made by (former prime minister) Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Chapter 53 of his memoirs Doctor in the House on the black eye incident, and the actions by the public prosecutor are different from what I have in the official case files of 1998. I believe that Mahathir was given a wrong briefing and he had been manipulated."

Mat Zain, who was the investigating officer in Anwar's black-eye incident, said he had confronted and interacted with the main players, including Mahathir, Gani, Musa, and Anwar, besides the commissioners in the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the black eye incident.

Blood sample stolen

The former top cop also said that Musa and former Malacca police chief Mohd Rodwan Mohd Yusof had "stolen" Anwar's blood sample during the black eye incident investigations at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Mat Zain claims that this was testified by HKL doctor Dr Zahari Noor in Anwar's abuse of power trial before the then High Court judge, the late Justice Augustine Paul, in December 1998.

The former Kuala Lumpur CID chief in a meeting with Dr Mahathir had related that the former premier had warned there should be no cover-up.

He said the fact that Musa went to meet Zahari for Anwar's blood sample for DNA testing on Oct 10, 1998, was sufficient for the people to conclude that the former IGP did not have complete evidence when he briefed Mahathir.

Mat Zain had in another letter late last year said evidence on Anwar's DNA in the Sodomy I trial had been fabricated.

"In my letter, I explained that any investigation of the information must refer to the investigation papers of the black-eye incident because of overlapping incidents. The main players in the black-eye case and the DNA fabrication are the same," he had writted then.

Rodwan rose to become aide de camp to Najib Abdul Razak when the politician was deputy prime minister, and had apparently met with alleged Sodomy II victim Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan at the Concorde Hotel.

Both Rodwan and Najib have been summoned as defence witnesses in the ongoing second sodomy trial of Anwar.
