Adam gives cops statement over threats

Police today took undergraduate Adam Adli Abdul Halim's statement over the latter's police report on alleged harrassment and attempted assault he faced following the ‘Najib flag’ fracas.
He spent about 90 minutes with the police this morning.
NONEAdam (left) claims that he and his family have been receiving threats ever since he took down Najib Razak's flag at Umno's headquarters in Putra World Trade Centre last weekend.
He alleges that on Monday, he was assaulted at the entrance to Bukit Aman headquarters after his meeting with police officials on the matter.
The 22-year-old Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student got trapped in the controversy after lowering Najib Abdul Razak's flag at the Umno headquarters at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, during a student demonstration for academic freedom last Saturday.
Adam has refused to apologise for his actions, steadfast in his view that it would defeat the purpose of his protest action, which is intended to champion autonomy in higher learning institutions, among others.
Right after giving his statement today, a representative from UPSI met him outside the police station and served Adam a notice requesting his appearance at a disciplinary hearing.
The university claimed that Adam, a third-year student, had “damaged the good name of UPSI” and “endangered morals and public order”.
NONELawyer Fadiah Nadwa Fikri (right) added that Adam was also called in because he was “threatened by a cop named Roslan Mokhtar”.

“Adam went to Bukit Aman to lodge a report because he was not only threatened, but was nearly punched in front of other cops,” said Fadiah.

“We will see what  they (the police) will do... will they take action on the one named Mokhtar?” she pondered.
Alleged assault attempt at Bukit Aman
Fadiah added that the “attempted assault” was clearly an act to intimidate Adam and rest of the students who marched to PWTC last Saturday.

However, Fadiah said no other student has been called in by the police.

NONEAdam, speaking to reporters outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, said police had jotted down his version of the alleged assault attempt at Bukit Aman.

On the ‘Najib flag’ incident and the student movement, Adam said: “The UUCA (University and University Colleges Act) has been amended four times since it was introduced in the 1970s. It is high time for its repeal.”

He also lambasted Kepala Batas Umno division deputy head Reezal Merican's statement that the former had stepped on the ‘Najib flag’ after lowering it.

“That statement was to create a negative view on SMM (Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia). We never did such a thing.”

Fadiah also defended the students, saying that it is their right to protest under Article 10 of the federal constitution.

“It was no crime, it is was just an act of civil disobedience which is acceptable around the word,” she opined.

She pointed out that the disciplinary proceeding was “another blatant abuse of power by the authorities to please their political masters”.

Meanwhile, SMM president Ahmad Syukri Abdul Razak, defended Deputy Higher Education Minister Saifuddin Abdullah, saying that the latter had been wrongly targeted by some pro-government students.

NONEAspirasi Undergraduate Leaders’ Alumni Society (Aspirasi) had demanded for Saifuddin’s resignation claiming the deputy minister was “too friendly” and a sympathiser of the pro-Mahasiswa factions (anti-establishment groups in universities).

“We welcome pro-Aspirasi’s (pro-government) demonstration, which shows that they have accepted protests as an effective way to voice opinions in a democratic system,” said Ahmad Syukri.

“But Saifuddin Abdullah should not resign as long as the UUCA issue has not been resolved,” he added.

Ahmad Syukri said Saifuddin was a “victim of certain quarters in the government” who are “taking cover behind the deputy minister’s openness”.

“We fully support Saifuddin. This is the voice of students, we do not have political motives,” added Adam.

Asked what the significance of lowering the flag was, Ahmad Syukri replied: “We wanted to send a strong message. Only by lowering the prime minister’s flag, can this be a reality.

“We want the prime minister to take drastic measures to repeal the laws. It is enough, we have been made dumb for 40 years.”

SMM, which currently has 11,000 members, gathered at the Umno headquarters at PWTC last Saturday, demanding the government abolish the UUCA.
