Former Selangor PAS chief Hasan Ali again took centre stage at an anti-apostasy rally in Kuala Kangsar yesterday, organised by the Himpun coalition, which is shunned by his party.
The event was prominently reported by Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian, which quoted Hasan as claiming that there is a highly organised attempt by a Christian organisation to spread their religion among Muslims.
This organisation was claimed to have sent its missionaries into mosques injubah (robes) and perform the Zuhur prayer with Muslims order to get close to the congregation.
According to Hasan (right), their targets are poor Muslims, those in debt, with poor knowledge of Islam, lacking in faith, the liberal minded, divorcees and those with family problems.
"This organisation has missionaries who are trained professionally, committed to their struggle and are strong mentally, (backed by) Western and neighbouring countries who are trying to infiltrate Muslims.
"They are entering mosques and praying together with Muslims. This is their strategy to gradually influence the minds of Muslims," said Hasan, who is also the Selangor exco member in charge of Islamic affairs.
He claims that a department under his purview, the Unit Selamatkan Akidah (Faith Rehabilitation Unit, or USA) had detected 51 Muslims who have been baptised and they are in the process of rehabilitation.
"This shows that the threat to our religion is real," he said, adding that the organisation concerned was most active in Sabah, Sarawak and Selangor.
‘A single apostate affects all Muslims'
Meanwhile, Berita Harian quoted deputy Perak mufti Zamri Hashim saying that there had been 43 applications to the Perak Syariah Courts for a declaration of apostasy during between January and November.
He added that there were 52 individuals who are being "rehabilitated" by the Perak Islamic Affairs Department during the same period.
"This numbers are based on official data. But what about apostasy (cases) which happens quietly? Maybe the numbers will be bigger.
"Apostasy is not an individual matter. It affects all Muslims because when someone becomes an apostate, it is as though Islam is not beautiful and not good," he said.
Both Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian reported that 3,000 people attended the rally last night at the Dewan Jubli Perak hall, billed as the ‘Gathering of a Million Muslims against Apostasy'.

Other than Hasan and Zamri, three other speakers were Teras Penupayaan Melayu (Teras) chief Azmi Abdul Hamid, Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) chief Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman and Yayasan Sofa chief Yusri Mohamad.
PAS had chose not to endorse the first Himpun rally in Shah Alam on October 22, because organisers stressed that their event was apolitical. About 5,000 people attended the event.
Later, PAS stressed that Hasan's participation was in his individual capacity and thus no action would be taken against him.
