The probe is being carried out with local and foreign authorities.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has began a proactive investigation on the corruption allegation involving a French engineering company, Alstom.
MACC said in statement here today that it was also liaising with the relevant authorities, locally and abroad, in carrying out the investigation, Bernama reports
However, the details concerning the investigation could not be announced to avoid any prejudice and bias.
“This is in line with Section 29(4) of the MACC Act 2009. MACC views seriously all corruption allegations and will carry out the investigation without fear or favour,” the statement said.
Alstom was fined RM130 million last month by the Swiss Attorney-General for failing to implement proper controls to prevent bribery in Malaysia, Latvia and Tunisia relating to payments to middlemen to secure government contracts to build power plants.
The probe by the Swiss is part of a growing mosaic of corruption investigations of European industrial groups, including one that resulted in €1billion in fines being handed out to Siemens.
According to news reports, the company is also under probe in the US for alleged bribery as well as in several other countries.
