O bring us a permit pudding…

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 — Malaysians planning to go carolling this Christmas season may do so without police permits, but authorities ask that they still obtain one to help “ensure public safety”.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said this today to clarify recent confusion over the need for carollers to provide unusual details in seeking police permits.

“We are very flexible, but it will be good if they inform us. By informing us, we can control the processions to ensure public safety and control traffic,” Ismail was reported as saying in a Bernama Online report today.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein today took to Twitter to clarify that no permits would be required for door-to-door carolling sessions, following uncertainty that their mobile nature would cause them run afoul of the new Peaceful Assembly Act that prohibits “assemblies in motion”.

The Star reported this morning that Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong also said no permit was needed despite it being a requirement in the past.

But the newspaper also wrote that local police in Johor and Klang had insisted that carollers must apply for permits before going ahead with their visits.

The Malaysian Insider reported on Friday that the police in Klang were asking Christians for more details than usual this year including the full names and contact details of homeowners whom they intended to visit this carolling season.

South Klang OCPD ACP Mohamad Mat Yusop later said district police began interviewing carolling groups that have applied for permits this year because administration of the district has been split in two.
