Hadi unveils new policy document, hudud absent

PAS has unveiled its latest policy document to state its Negara Berkebajikan, or Nation of Care and Opportunity, agenda that excludes any mention of implementing hudud law.

pas launch welfare state document 111211 hadi awangParty president Abdul Hadi Awang said the 10-point document is an extension of its Negara Kebajikan (Welfare State) agenda which was used during the 2008 general election campaign.

In 1999, PAS campaigned based on their Islamic state agenda advocating hudud law, but later toned down its religious stance for the 2008 general election.

Of late, PAS and Umno has revived a verbal spat over the implementation of hudud law, with the former insisting that it is still part of its party's ultimate goal, that in turn provided Umno's BN partner MCA fodder against Pakatan Rakyat.

Hadi said the gist of the 10 points were already included in Pakatan's common policy document Buku Jingga (Orange Book).

"We are promoting the same things. There is no difference among Pakatan parties on basic matters of a plural society. If there are differences, we will celebrate and respect our differences.

"This is not just a democratic practice, but it is the practice of Islam itself," said Hadi.

He clarified that the new agenda was different from the previousNegara Kebajikan agenda.

Importance of morality

He said that the government of a conventional welfare state would provide assistance and facilities, but the people would still be burdened by high taxes, highway toll charges and other fees.

PAS's concept of Negara Berkebajikan on the other hand would address fundamental needs without burdening the people, Hadi explained.

Meanwhile, the document details PAS’ 10-point agenda for a fair, clean and trustworthy government, towards a caring, peaceful and united society and a sustainable, balanced and fair economy.

It also touches on quality education, efficient health services, comprehensive welfare services and the promotion of harmonious, happy and moral families.

Other areas covered include youth and productivity, infrastructure and environmental conservation.

After launching the document, Hadi told reporters that the moral values of the nation’s leader is very important to ensure that the leader would not steal the nation’s wealth.

“We want to introduce a responsible leadership that will honour the people’s trust,” he said.
