Perkasa’s sudden lashing out at the MCA over comments made by an equally clownish president, Chua Soi Lek, concerning the Hudud law is truly comedic.
It reflects the level of intelligence that the Malay rights group is endowed with and also puts the MCA up for a hypocrisy scrutiny which it is bound to lose. With friends like these, no wonder BN coalition boss - UMNO - is scratching its head over when to call for snap polls.
Perkasa secretary-general, Syed Hassan Syed Ali, had said Umno needed to advise the scandal-tainted MCA president to “watch his mouth.”
“Soi Lek also said it is hard to attract investors because of Malaysia’s poor human rights records and of cruel punishments, this will also make investors flee,” the Perkasa leader said in a statement.
“For the record Perkasa supports hudud. That is hukum Allah (God’s law). It is just that Perkasa rejects PAS’ brand of hudud. PAS’ hudud has strayed from its (real) meaning and intent. It is just that Perkasa believes this country is not yet ready for the real hudud,”
How many brands of Hudud are there?
Perkasa may scream bloody murder over MCA’s comments about Hudud, but their arguments illustrate glaring flaws. Perkasa’s own statement is contradictory and ultimately makes no sense whatsoever.
Firstly, it is funny that Perkasa supports Hudud but not the BRAND that PAS subscribes to. If that is the case, does it mean Perkasa subscribes to the brand peddled by UMNO since it is to UMNO that it refers to, when advising MCA to shut up on anything Hudud.
Next, what is this brand of Hudud that UMNO subscribes to? Frankly, no one has heard of UMNO Hudud before. Also, if Hudud, being hukum Allah or God's punishment, is practiced by UMNO, would not UMNO collapse over the sheer weight of its own sins against the people of Malaysia?
No, this is not a tongue-in-the-cheek statement but seriously meant because corruption forms a huge part of Hudud, not just stealing, illicit sex, drinking alcohol and so on.
So, no way. UMNO cannot have Hudud implemented unless it brings in a 'faked' brand that will have to be so twisted, it will again make Malaysia the laughing stock in the international community. UMNO corruption, embezzlement of public funds, cheating and what-not would all have to go under Hudud - not the civil courts - since UMNO insists it is an Islamic party and must therefore subject itself to the Syariah system or else be declared a fraud.
Alternatively, if Perkasa has its own brand of Hudud, it should then enlighten Malaysians especially the Muslim community, which must surely be agog to know more information about Perkasa Hudud!
MCA Hypocrisy
Secondly, and this showcases MCA's massive hypocrisy. Today’s investors are attracted by economic stability and clean practices in the market place. Lower crime and social ills are but a part of the bigger draw that attracts investors.
The sharp drop for the Malaysia in the Corruption Perception Index for the third year running, slipping to 4.3 this year, leaving it in 60th place out of 183 countries compared with 37th place when Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi took over as prime minister in 2003 should be taken much more seriously as these are the real factors that scare investors away.
Why doesn't MCA bring this up to UMNO and Prime Minister Najib Razak? Is it because it also has a share in contributing to the fall in the graft index viz-a-vis the RM12.5billion PKFZ financial debacle?
But what really burns up Malaysians - and yet Soi Lek and his team are somehow thick-skinned enough not to realize - is how the MCA can zoom in on Hudud as chasing away investors but closes both eyes to the biggest deterrent of Corruption - a factor that they have never dared to speak up on before. This being so, who gives the MCA the right to talk about Hudud being bad for investment? Why should anyone want to listen to skewed, questionable and unprofessional advise from shady leaders like Soi Lek?
As for Perkasa, which claims to be the defender of the Malay race, isn't it worried about the scourge of corruption? Isn't it worried about the deteriorating morality in the country caused by endemic graft and bribes? How come - like the MCA - Perkasa is also silent on the issue?
The answer is simple. Obviously for both Perkasa and MCA, corruption is a 'sensitive' issue because the biggest perpetrator is none other than boss party UMNO! Notice, neither Perkasa nor MCA has uttered a squeak about Shahrizat Jalil's cows and condos scandal. And yet they want to talk about Hudud!
Perkasa Hudud
Thirdly, what does Perkasa mean by saying that Malaysia is not yet ready for the real Hudud law? The Syariah court is the base for Hudud to be implemented. Why then have two separate entities that supervise laws in Malaysia - the Civil court and the Syariah court; if there is no intention to employ Hudud?
Granted, there will be arguments over the rights of the non-Muslims over Hudud and rightly so because to them, it is an abhorrent law with outrageous punishment. Nonetheless, it is clear that Hudud resides under the jurisdiction of the Syariah Court and thus applicable to Muslims only. Thus, to imply that Malaysia is not ready for Hudud, is Perkasa saying that it is the Muslims who are not ready to accept Hudud?
Really, Perkasa should state its reasons clearly, rather than pour all the blame onto someone as limp as itself - the MCA. It is clear Perkasa is just using the MCA to defect attention from the real, hard work in store if it really wants to implement Hudud and not just pay lip service.
Perkasa just wants to come off as a 'good' Muslim to the Malay community. But Perkasa, being the bastion of Malay rights, should actually embark on a mission to ready the Muslim community for Hudud if it is really serious it wants Hudud. Remember, Hudud is hukum Allah and thus any good Muslim should subscribe to it. But do we see Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali doing any such thing?
The fact is Syed Hassan’s lashing out at the MCA is merely a political play to keep Perkasa relevant to the Malay cause in Malaysia. The fact is that many Malays - while they acknowledge they have to accept Hudud - are not quite comfortable with a law that amputates limbs, beheads and stones to death and whips. After all, to err is human and one should never throw stones at another when one lives in a glass house.
Soul mates
It is the hypocrisy wrought by decades of BN rule, forcing and twisting its views on Malaysians to hides its main motive - which is to rob and plunder - that has caused so many generations of confused citizens, Malays in particular. Not only are the Malays bombarded with racist warnings on a daily basis, they are pulled left and right with differing religious interpretations, all of which come with vested interest.
With UMNO already loosing the confidence of the Malays, Perkasa has stepped up to be seen as the champion of the Malays. The need to lash out at any non-Malay bodies that comment on anything connected to the Malays will be the staple of Perkasa as we near the 13th general election. But in showcasing themselves as champions of the Malays, Perkasa is showing us the shallowness of their thinking and ideals.
In truth, Perkasa and MCA are soul mates. They are both leeches bent on milking whatever issue they think would benefit them. Indeed, Perkasa has no stand whatsoever on Hudud or the Malays that is worthwhile and useful. The same goes for the MCA, only it extends to the Chinese. The MCA too has nothing for the Chinese that is worthwhile and useful.
And to their credit, the Malays and the Chinese intuitively understand this and it is why they have rejected both Perkasa and the MCA.
