PSM: Contractor shot dead by cops at close range

A very close range shot allegedly fired by a police personnel to the chest of contractor Kathir Oli a/l Pakeer Mohamed, 31, resulted in his death last Sept 15.

Following the circumstances of Kathir’s death, his wife S Janaky and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) have asked that a public inquiry into the death be called.

NONEJanaky (right) and the PSM handed over a memorandum to the Malaysian Human Rights Council (Suhakam) at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

According to Perak PSM representative Mahonarani Rasiah, the post mortem revealed that there was a bullet wound on the left side of the chest as a result of the close range shot, where the muzzle of the pistol was believed to have been placed on the chest.

“The wound showed that the bullet had penetrated vital organs like the heart, aorta, and lungs, resulting in an instantaneous death. This clearly shows that there was bad intention resulting in Kathir’s death as the shot was not meant to hurt or stop him,” said Mahonarani in reading out the memorandum.

NONEThe post mortem report on Kathir’s death was attached to the memorandum, where the cause of death is classified as gunshot wound to the chest. The report was handed over to Suhakam commissioner Md Shaani Abdullah.

The PSM representative said the police had cited self-defence, but eyewitnesses who were with the deceased claimed he was just leaving a pub when stopped by the policeman.

Mahonarani claimed Perak police chief Mohd Shukri Dahlan had tried to close the case by alleging that Kathir and his friends had brought a parang with the alleged intention of robbing the premises.

‘Man was pointing a gun’

“The police painted a picture that Kathir was killed by the police in self-defence. However, this is rebutted by the eyewitnesses,” said Mahonarani, who attached a copy of Shukri’s statement.

She said Kathir’s friends had lodged police reports following the incident where they claimed they were not allowed into the pub resulting in verbal exchanges, bottles being thrown and pushing and shoving. Then Kathir and his friends entered their car to leave the place.

“Kathir was reversing the car when suddenly a man pointing a gun arrived at the back of the car and stopped them. Kathir did not realise the person was a plainclothes policeman,” said Mahonarani.

“Kathir and his friends alighted from the car and a quarrel ensued. There was pushing and shoving and an exchange of punches. Without any warning a shot was fired, resulting in Kathir falling and dying in his friend’s arms,” said the PSM member.

Mahonarani said after Kathir was shot, the policeman then handcuffed two of Kathir’s friends.

She expressed concern over the results of the police investigation to be sent to the deputy public prosecutor’s office as the authorities may investigate the police version of events and not the family’s version.

“This is important because as of Nov 10, the Perak police chief is still sticking to his own version,” she said.

Janaky described her husband as a loving and non-violent person and wanted Suhakam to conduct a public inquiry to clear “her husband’s name”.

“I do not want my four children grow up to hear that their father was a criminal. I want to clear my husband’s name,” she said.

Also present was PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvam.
