The relocation of a Hindu temple to Section 23 near Shah Alam, which sparked controversy among the residents, is expected to be completed by the end of next month, said Selangor executive councillor Rodziah Ismail.
She said the decision to relocate the Sri Maha Mariamman temple from Section 19 was made after taking into account the views of all parties including the temple management.
Rodziah (right) said the state government was now in the process of gazetting the 0.20-hectare temple land, belonging to the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS), to a place of worship site.
“The state government has directed the temple committee to start the relocation work on Dec 15 and we expect the new temple in Section 23 will be fully operational by Jan 27.
“We will only demolish the old structure of the temple building in Section 19 once the relocation exercise is completed,” she said at a press conference near Shah Alam, today.
Rodziah, who is Batu Tiga assemblyperson, however said the state government will still hold the ownership of the temple land in Section 23 and that the committee will be given a letter of attorney to manage the temple.
Shah Alam Section 23 residents had objected to the relocation of the temple as they felt that it would be too close to the residential area where 70 percent of the residents are Muslims.
The residents instead urged the temple to be moved to the originally proposed site in Section 22.
The temple is currently located in Section 19, which was part of the Sungai Renggam Estate before the PKNS developed the area into a housing estate.
Meanwhile, temple committee secretary N Chetra said that the committee needs more than RM441,000 to undertake carving works and those who wish to donate to the temple could call temple treasurer NA Ramu at.
