Umno Youth: Flag lowering incident immature
Umno Youth has chided student protestors who lowered a flag bearing the picture of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak when they converged at the Umno headquarters yesterday.
In a statement today, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said his movement has been supportive legislative amendments for greater academic freedom, but the incident yesterday went too far.
“While we are championing for more openness and inclusiveness, let us not taint or belittle our efforts with actions that does not reflect maturity.
“Such actions should not be taken by students who wants to their role and voice as intellectuals be recognised and representative of society,” he said.
He urged the student movement to be rational and well mannered in their struggles and in their political activities. He said students should not be emotional.
“This struggle is based on intellect, rational decision making and maturity, particularly in respecting a difference of opinion,” he said.
Khairy said that protest organisers Solidarity Mahasiswa Malaysia and Gerakan Kebebasan Akademik (Bebas) should apologise to Najib and Umno.
Yesterday, some 500 students marched from Masjid Jamek mosque to PWTC, where the Umno headquarters were located, to handover a protest note to Deputy Higher Education Minister Saifuddin Abdullah.
