A ‘white’ Christmas at Sungai Ara, Penang

GEORGE TOWN: The Ooi family got all hot and bothered doing their outdoor Christmas decorations, but the end result turned out really cool.
The elaborate winter scene of Santa Claus complete with dwarfs playing in a “snow-draped” cabin has drawn attention as Malaysians are not used to outdoor decorations.
The colourful Yuletide scene with four life-sized dwarfs was put up by S.H. Ooi.
It took the 52-year-old more than a month to put up the decorations outside his house with the help of family members and friends.
Among the materials used were polystyrene (for the presents), polycotton (snow), colourful pieces of cloth (costumes for Santa and dwarfs), gold-painted bricks (gold bars) and an assortment of ornaments.
“We just want to help spread happiness, joy and warmth to everyone during the festive period,” Ooi said at his house in Sungai Ara.
His efforts have certainly paid off with passers-by and neighbours snapping pictures of the amazing scene.
Ooi said he was inspired to create the scene after a family trip to a cold country during Christmas last year.
“The two dwarfs carrying a bucket of gold bars represent the reaping of rewards after a hard year's work
“The third playfully skis on the snow and the fourth just sits back and relaxes,” he explained.
Being a fan of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, he decided to “produce” the dwarfs together with Santa.
“We wanted to come up with a different theme this year as we had put up a Santa sleigh and reindeer last year.”
The family has also been decorating their house during festive seasons such as Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival for several years.- Star
