AirAsia blindsided by fares issue

Budget carrier AirAsia insists that it was not aware of the problems with the fares carried on its website until sued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

air asia airasia aircraft"We emphasise that we were not aware of the matter before the ACCC brought its proceedings," said AirAsia in a statement toMalaysiakini today.

However, corrective measures has been taken, said the no-frills airline "as soon as the issue became known to us (and) we have resolved the issue on our website".
The Australian consumer watchdog initiated legal proceedings, alleging that some fares on AirAsia’s website did not include all taxes, duties, fees and other charges.

The airline explained that the issue has to do with a glitch in their website in September last year.

“The particular issues with the relevant flights related to whether all taxes and charges were displayed for customers, which appears to have arisen from an IT issue,” said AirAsia.

“The issue does notNONEaffect the A$99 promo fares for the Sydney-Kuala Lumpur route launched by AirAsia X recently,” it added.

The company is investigating the allegations put forth by ACCC on Jan 17 when the suit was filed in country's Federal Court.

“The company takes its legal and everyday commitment to its consumers very seriously and will be carefully reviewing the contents of the ACCC’s claims,” read the statement.

The airline noted that it “always seeks to conduct its business fairly and in an ethical and proper manner, in full compliance with all applicable laws”.

It added that it is determined to resolve the matter with ACCC “constructively”.
The case has been up for a scheduled conference at the Federal Court in Melbourne on March 2.
