The Tragicomedy that is RPK

The Tragicomedy that is RPK
Disgraced blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin really should stop pretending that he can’t come back to Malaysia. Why would the BN detain him when he is now clearly one of their best friends. He had proven his worth to the BN by attacking Pakatan just before the Sarawak Election. He has now done so again, by attacking Pakatan just before the General Election.
Last week, Raja Petra unilaterally announced that he was 90% certain that Anwar Ibrahim was the man in the video released by the tainted Umno trio known as Datuk T. Raja Petra did not explain why he took so long to arrive at his remarkable conclusion but we may safely assume that it is because the General Elections is nigh. Nor did Raja Petra document what scientific methodology he used to identify the actor in the video but we can probably again safely assume that there was none!
Straw puppet
Raja Petra appears now to be a straw puppet, his strings firmly held by Umno inasmuch as his actions appear to be exactly what Umno wants; when it wants it. His mouthpieces are now the much-reviled propaganda organs of the BN; NST and Utusan.
Now let us face a fact; there was no point at which RPK could have been ever described as an ethical or principled journalist. He was too fond of being the news rather than reporting it. His ‘sources’ were usually fictional characters created in attempts to add credibility to his amazing tales. This includes during the pre-2008 era when he appeared to be fully on Pakatan’s side.
Many Pakatan leaders and supporters  did not successfully evade the moral hazard of keeping silent when, in some cases,  RPK was without doubt producing and circulating untrue defamations of some BN personalities. He is now doing the same of Pakatan personalities.
But RPK has made the cardinal mistake of believing in his own publicity and now finds himself ostracized. The blogs and forums that feted him now berate his treachery. Commentators are unforgiving. Where RPK thought he was a leader, he was in fact, merely an aggregator. He functioned as a useful outlet for the people’s anger by allowing his blog to act like the print-version of the average Malaysian coffee-shop, with a bonus conspiracy-theory section.  But in his current poorly-disguised attempt to influence his audience to turn from Pakatan to BN, RPK has failed, and miserably.
In addition to unelectronically and unscientifically analyzing the video earlier referred to, RPK accused several lawyers of receiving work from MBPJ, the Petaling Jaya Town Council. It was factually untrue. Not one of the lawyers named ; Derek Fernandez, Latheefa Koya, N.Surendran and R.Sivarasah; had received any work from MBPJ.
In addition they were all Environment, Human and Animal Rights lawyers who did such work on a mostly pro-bono basis. It is unclear why RPK would be so foolish as to attempt to tar with his libelous brush such a particularly upstanding and incorruptible group of lawyers. Sivarasah was also accused of having a ‘swank’ office. The inquisitive visitor to his office will find it to be most certainly ‘unswank’ and liitle more than functional. The ‘source’ for this information that RPK ‘received’ is no doubt another of his imaginary friends.
Why the drastic turn
So why has RPK turned so drastically against Pakatan? We will speculate that it is a combination of some perceived slight from Pakatan and overtures from BN. Overtures from BN usually take the form of money, for the BN is reduced to being a party which can offer only that.
Somewhere in the middle of RPK’s sad little tale, he had the idea of forming an alternative party, MCLM. It failed almost before it started as it would have only meant a dilution of Pakatan’s vote against the BN. MCLM would have got few votes.
Haris Ibrahim, who ill-advisedly joined MCLM, attempted to become an unelected regulatory authority which would ‘vet’ Pakatan’s candidates but was snubbed by Pakatan component parties. Subsuquent to RPK’s latest comments, Haris has resigned from MCLM as have several others who had joined MCLM. Haris is an honest fellow after all, perhaps, burdened only by poor judgment rather RPK’s clearly malicious intent.
We will see RPK in Malaysia again soon enough, perhaps in a week or two, but almost certainly before the General Election. The trio of Ezam, Nalla and Ummi need a fourth.
