Feel the love, DAP tells PAS

DAP supremo Karpal Singh calls on the Islamic party to review its stand pertaining to celebrating Valentine's Day.
GEORGE TOWN: DAP has urged its Pakatan Rakyat partner PAS to reconsider its stand pertaining to the celebration of Valentine’s Day.
Party national chairman Karpal Singh said any attempt to oppose the celebration would be against individual rights and freedom.
He noted that PAS, especially its Youth wing, had constantly objected to Valentine’s Day celebration.
“It’s time for PAS to review its stand against an event, which is recognised worldwide,” he told reporters here.
Yesterday, PAS Youth handed a memorandum to Information, Communications and Culture Minister Rais Yatim objecting the widespread promotion of Valentine’s Day in the mass media.
In the memorandum, PAS Youth requested the minister to monitor and act on promotional campaigns through advertisements on television, radio and newspapers to market Valentine’s Day.
PAS Youth was worried that large scale and continuous promotion campaigns to celebrate the event on Feb 14 would encourage people especially Muslims to be involved in vice activities.
In another development, Karpal stressed that neither DAP nor Pakatan Rakyat would turn Malaysia into a republic if it captured Putrajaya in the next general election.
He said DAP believed in the current democratic system of constitutional monarchy, thus the idea to form a republic did not arise at all.
Karpal was responding to axed PAS man Hasan Ali’s claim that DAP and Pakatan harbour the intention to turn Malaysia into a republic.
