PM Najib: CBT charge not for police to decide

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said the decision on any charges against individuals linked to the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) will be decided entirely by the attorney-general.

Speaking to reporters in Sekinchan, Selangor today, Najib said it was the constitutional duty of the attorney-general to do so.

"We cannot assume that all investigations will end with prosecution for it must take into account specific provisions in the constitution.

"I cannot assume what will happen in this case because it is at the discretion of the attorney-general in accordance with the constitution. Only he is entitled to make the decision," he said, according to Bernama.

He was responding to questions about Bukit Aman commercial crimes investigation department (CCID) director Syed Ismail Syed Azizan statement yesterday.

Syed Ismail had publicly said that CCID would be recommending to the attorney-general that NFC chief executive officer Mohamed Salleh Ismail be charged with criminal breach of trust (CBT).

NFC has since hit out at the CCID for attempting to pre-empt the attorney-general’s decision.
Meanwhile, Umno Cheras division chief Syed Ali Alhabshee said NFC's bosses have nothing to fear from police investigations if they are not guilty.

"Leave it to the police and the AG to charge those involved, if they are not guilty then those at NFC need not fear," he wrote in his division blog today.

"The police should carry out a thorough investigation, if there is a case then they should raise the report to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further action.

"Why should NFC's management be afraid and behave as if something is up, to the point of making their statement this evening," he added.
