Sub-standard construction of roads is a bane in Sarawak and PKR wants MACC to step in and investigate immediately the reason.
KUCHING: Sarawak PKR wants the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to immediately investigate the construction of a 18km stretch of road built just before Christmas last year and which is now in “deplorable condition”.
Party chief Baru Bian said it was obvious that the 18km Trusan-Long Tengoa Road was built using sub-standard materials.
“The road from Lawas right to Long Tengoa which was completed just before Christmas last year is in deplorable conditions. There are potholes here and there and all along the road.
“I believe it is still under warranty and I call upon the MACC to investigate it as I believe this is one of the roads in the state that are 60% leakages as stated by the Auditor General in his previous report.
“I also call on the State Minister of Infrastructure Development and Commendations Michael Manyin to investigate the road,” said Bian, who is also Ba Kelalan assemblyman.
The road, he said, was in Manyin’s constituency.
Bian said he had received a lot of complaints about the road because it was less than a year ago and now even cement and iron bars are coming out from the road.
“The worries of the people are that the conditions of the road pose grave danger to road users who come from more than 10 villages in the area.
“There must be something wrong with the road, and we want the MACC to carry out an immediate investigation,” he stressed.
Rampant corruption
The PKR believed that there are many roads having similar problems with that of Trusan-Long Tengoa road.
“The Barisan Nasional leaders have been saying that the Barisan is ‘good and caring’, but they give us sub-standard products such as the Trusan-Long Tengoa road.
“The money they used to build these poor quality roads are the public money, our money and not Barisan money,” he added, pointing out that this is the kind of corruption is rampantly in Sarawak.
He said that Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management and Minister of Public Utilities has been informed of the situation.
“He’s promised to look into it but so far no news yet,” said Bian.
