Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob today took a swipe at Chinese newspaper journalists, repeatedly calling them “stupid” for reporting his alleged statement that the Lynas radioactive waste could be dumped in Sungai Lembing.
According to reports in several Chinese newspapers, Adnan also pushed away a camera held by a photographer who was snapping shots of his outburst.
He then challenged the photographer to publish the photo tomorrow, creating an awkward moment at the press conference in Kuantan.
Three journalists subsequently decided to leave the press conference.
The drama unfolded when Adnan suddenly raised the controversial Lynas rare earth plant, which is set to begin operation in nearby Gebeng, after officiating a book fair in Kuantan today.

‘Bury it in caves’ suggestion made at a dinner
He told journalists that he had never suggested that the radioactive waste be dumped in Sungai Lembing, saying it was merely an example given by Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) director-general Raja Abdul Aziz Raja Adnan at a dinner.
“Raja Abdul Aziz said there are many caves in Malaysia that can be turned into waste dumpsites such as those in Sungai Lembing. I never said the waste can be dumped in Sungai Lembing. This is stupid,” he shouted.
Sungai Lembing was a tin mining town about 40km northwest of Kuantan. Today, most of its underground mines are no longer in operation.

Adnan also scolded Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh, one of the key proponents against the Lynas plant.
"You report that I say this: If PKR Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh had said the same thing, then she is also stupid. All Chinese newspapers and reporters who reported the news are stupid.
"They can sue me! I also can sue them."
When a journalist tried to explain, Adnan interrupted: "No need to explain. I received a SMS saying that the Chinese press reported I suggested dumping the waste in Sungai Lembing.
"You reported without verify it yourself, this is really stupid."
